Canon EOS 70D Review - A More Detailed Look

Everything about the long awaited Canon EOS 70D

Is the Canon EOS 70D worth the wait and does it live up to the hype?

After reading a lot of rumors and hints from Canon itself, as well as the camera enthusiast blogosphere, I have been eagerly awaiting a first look at what I am hoping will soon replace my Canon EOS 60D.

Not a bad camera, but it does fall short of my needs as a photographer who's not an amateur, but is nowhere near being a professional. Don't most of us fall somewhere in the middle there?

Official information on the new Canon EOS 70D was finally released (July 2nd, 2013). Below is all the known and verified information, in one spot, along with my thoughts and hopes on this long awaited, next generation, digital camera!

Comparable to my old Canon EOS 60D, but with much more advanced features and an affordable price, the Canon EOS 70D is a dream come true. It sports a 20.2 Megapixel CMOS (APS-C) sensor, 14-bit A/D conversion, ISO 100-12800 (expandable to H: 25600) for shooting from bright to dim light and a high performance DIGIC 5+ Image Processor for exceptional image quality and processing speed.

It is set to release in the United States in September 2013. Also, it is expected that the first few deliveries will all have been pre-sold, so this will be a hard one to get before Christmas UNLESS you pre-order. You've been warned...

Technical Specs

So what does it do?

Okay, it's a camera. I can write for hours about all the lovely things it does and why I am so eager for it to start shipping so mine arrives for me to play with. But most of you want to know the technical specifications, especially since so much hype and rumor was floating around since early on in the year. Some were even hoping it brewed coffee. Anyway, here are the details for those interested in only that. Compare it to the Canon EOS 60D and you'll see why I am so excited.

As mentioned, it comes with an incredible 20.2 megapixels, for crisp, high resolution snapshots the like of which you have never seen before. No more blurry blotches when you blow a picture up to a decent size for printing or viewing! The new autofocus feature will make you think you're holding a handycam. It will focus on the subject and track it no matter where or how fast it moves. This is brand new technology in digital cameras, and Canon is way ahead of the competition, at least at this price point. The light sensitivity provided by its ISO 100-12800, which is expandable, allows for shooting from bright to dim light with no degradation. The new processor, a DIGIC 5+, will give you exceptional image quality and processing speed.

It also comes with built in wireless technology that allows you to wirelessly transfer your images to social networking sites, share them with other wireless-enabled Canon cameras, and upload virtually anywhere on your iOS or Android smartphone. The built in WiFi, as a bomus feature, actually allows you to control the camera from your smartphone. Talk about convenience!

Backwards Compatibility

Canon has done a great job in making this new model backwards compatible with what are usually your highest priced accessories, and of course, I mean lenses. Not everything will be compatible in this regard, as the new CMOS AF technology comes with some requirements.

You'll be happy to know that I have personally confirmed with contacts at Canon that the Canon EOS 70D is, as of this writing, compatible with 103 EF Lenses. Chances are good that yours is included, though you will need to check on this. If you do have any doubts, feel free to contact us and we will do my best to get you a quick answer.

The reason not all will be compatible with the CMOS AF in this camera is because, for the first time ever, it uses dual pixel technology. Dual Pixel CMOS AF is a cutting-edge Canon technology that required a full redesign of the sensor. Traditionally, image sensors have one photodiode per pixel, but the CMOS sensor on the Canon EOS 70D has two photodiodes per pixel, enabling each pixel on the sensor to perform both phase-difference detection autofocus and capture light. This is what allows the autofocus on this camera to function almost instantly, and seamlessly, on video.

As for other peripherals and addons, such as battery packs, docks, and the like, we don't have much information at this time. We would assume that there is significant backwards compatibility with at least the more recent lines of products, but we cannot vouch for it until more info is released.
